Catholic Arguments for Celibacy in priesthood: in
WHITE.... refutations in
RED....First Period
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03481a.htmTurning now to the historical development of the present law of celibacy, we must necessarily begin with St. Paul's direction (I Tim., iii, 2, 12, and Titus, i, 6) that a bishop or a
deacon should be "the husband of one wife".
These passages seem fatal to any contention that celibacy was made obligatory upon the clergy from the beginning, but on the other hand, the Apostle's desire that other men might be as himself (I Cor., vii, 7-8
)( PAUL WAS NOT A BISHOP OR PASTOR OR DEACON), already quoted) precludes the inference that he wished all ministers of the Gospel to be married
.( STRAW MAN) The words beyond doubt mean that the fitting candidate was a man, who, amongst other qualities which St. Paul enunciates as likely to make his authority respected, possessed also such stability of divorce, by remaining faithful to one wife. The direction is therefore restrictive, no injunctive;
(POPE SAID SO DOUBLE TALK) it excludes men who have married more than once, but it does not impose marriage as a necessary condition
.( BECAUSED WE CHANGED THE WORD MUST TO BEHOOVETH AND WELL BASICALLY WE SAID SO) This freedom of choice seems to have lasted during the whole of what we may call, with Vacandard, the first period of the Church's legislation, i.e. down to about the time of Constantine and the Council of Nicaea. ......
Notice a Subtle Change of the words of God here: They note that a Bishop or decon SHOULD be the Husband of one wife:
1st Timothy 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; KJV
2 It behoveth therefore a bishop to be blameless, the husband of one wife, sober, prudent, of good behaviour, chaste,( ADDED TO THE TEXT) given to hospitality, a teacher,: Douay Reimes officila Catholic Bible.
Now is this a matter of our bible Verses YOur bible or have they simply Changed the word of God to meet the NEED of a Celebate priesthood? Behoveth is not the same as MUST is it?
So what was done? Well to be Honest they simply LIED about the word. You see the WORD translated MUST in the KJV is also translated MUST in verse 7 " Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil."KJV So what the deception? The Deception is that the papists translated exactly the same Greek word as MUST in their version in Verse 7 as well. NOTE their Version:
"Moreover, he must have a good testimony of them who are without: lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil."
Now why translate the word MUST in verse 7 and Behoveth in verse 2? Answer they ALREADY HAD A CELIBATE BISHOPRIC and they needed a verse to give them permission, or at the very least NOT to forbid their unbiblical practice of forbidding their clergy to marry.
From here they would argue that no one is forced to Join the Priesthood ( unbiblical order) or Become a Bishop or deacon and since they are not forced to join , no one is forced to take a forced vow. Its simply double talk based upon a Deceptive practice to begin with.
the SCRIPTURE:
1Ti 3:1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
1Ti 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
1Ti 3:3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
1Ti 3:4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
1Ti 3:5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
1Ti 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
1Ti 3:7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
1Ti 3:8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
1Ti 3:9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
1Ti 3:10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.
1Ti 3:11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
1Ti 3:12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
1Ti 3:13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Titus 1:5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: Tit 1:6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
Tit 1:7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
Tit 1:8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
Tit 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. KJV
DRV
Tit 1:5 For this cause I left thee in Crete: that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting and shouldest ordain priests in every city, as I also appointed thee:
Tit 1:6 If any be without crime, the husband of one wife. having faithful children, not accused of riot or unruly...
The word Priest in Every other passage translated in the DRV other then the ones referred to here and one other , are translated as ANCIENTS, ELDERS etc.
The earliest enactment on the subject is that of the Spanish Council of Elvira (between 295 and 302) in canon xxxiii. It imposes celibacy upon the three higher orders of the clergy, bishops, priests, and
deacons. If they continue to live with their wives and beget children after their ordination they are to be deposed.
HMM The Council of Elvira in Cannon 33 tells Fathers and Husbands that if they wish to be Bishops and Deacons and even their non- office Priests that they MUST Never have sexual relations with their wives again in order to stay Bishops?
What Meaneth the Scriptures then:
Heb 13:4 Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.
the Council of Trullo, in 692, finally adopted a somewhat stricter view. Celibacy in a bishop became a matter of precept. If he were previously married, he had at once to separate from his wife upon his consecration
More catholic Pronouncements promoting the break up of marriages and the destructions of what God hath Joined together?
What Meaneth the Scriptures:
Matthew 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
Mark 10:9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
At a Roman council held by Pope Siricius in 386 an edict was passed forbidding priests and deacons to have conjugal intercourse with their wives (Jaffe-Löwenfeld, Regesta, I, 41), and the pope took steps to have the decree enforced in Spain and in other parts of Christendom (Migne, P.L., LVI, 558 and 728). Africa and Gaul, as we learn from the canons of various synods, seem to have been earnest in the same movement, and though we hear of some mitigation of the severity of the ordinance of Elvira, was enforced against transgressors than that if they took back their wives they were declared incapable of promotion to any higher grade, it may fairly be said that by the time of St. Leo the Great the law of celibacy was generally recognized in the West.
A POPE helped pass an Edict forbidding Married men who became Bishops from having Conjugal intercourse with their OWN WIVES? The POPE said to Defraud one another yet the scriptures says differently. Even Encouraging the Nunneries for Priest/bishop wives...
What Saith the Scriptures:
1Co 7:2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
1Co 7:3 Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.
1Co 7:4 The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
1Co 7:5 Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.
1Co 7:11 But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife
